Ramirez's RBI hit squeezes Red Sox past Twins

Manny Ramirez drove home the only run of the game.

Manny Ramirez's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning proved to be the game-winner as the Boston Red Sox escaped with a 1-0 win over the scorching Minnesota Twins in a well-pitched opener of a three-game series.

Daisuke Matsuzaka did not factor in the decision despite keeping the Twins off the board through a season-high 7 1/3 innings. He scattered six hits and three walks to go with five strikeouts, and has surrendered just one run in his last three starts.

Mets hold off Phillies to move above .500
David Wright hit a solo home run and drove in four as the New York Mets held off the Philadelphia Phillies, 10-9, to wrap up a four-game set at Citizens Bank Park.

Endy Chavez went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI and runs scored, while Jose Reyes went 2-for-4 and scored twice for the Mets, who took the final three games of the set after dropping the opener. Pedro Martinez (3-2) got the win for giving up just two runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.

Marlins extend Maddux's winless streak
Ricky Nolasco tossed eight strong innings and the Florida Marlins defeated Greg Maddux and the San Diego Padres, 3-1, in the opener of a three-game set at Petco Park.

Nolasco (10-4) allowed one run on five hits and struck out seven. The right- hander has won a career-high five straight decisions and owns a 9-1 mark in his previous 12 games. Kevin Gregg tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to notch his 16th save.
